Spotting signs of dementia as early as possible is crucial.

Symptoms of dementia can manifest in different ways for different people and can include memory loss, confusion, communication difficulties, mood swings, changes in behaviour, difficulty with familiar tasks, and impaired judgement. It’s important to remember that each person’s journey with dementia is unique, so symptoms that appear for one person, may manifest differently in another.

The first small signs of dementia are the most important as they could be an indication of something more serious so it’s important for families and carers to be aware of any small but noticeable changes.

Detecting these signs sooner rather than later is key to effectively managing symptoms and finding the best treatment and support available.

Early detection is vital.

Alzheimer's
Society

The Alzheimer's Society offers a whole raft of useful information, including helpful factsheets and…

  • publications about dementia and young onset dementia, as well as a guide to understanding diagnosis. On their website, you’ll find a dementia directory listing local support groups and services - additionally, they host an online forum called Talking Point, where people affected by dementia can connect with others for support and advice. They also have a comprehensive checklist of dementia symptoms to help identify potential early signs, which can help you when entering into discussion with other family members, your GP or our team over here at St Catherine’s.

Dementia
Forward

We work closely in partnership with Dementia Forward – a charity dedicated to supporting…

  • people and their families affected by dementia and young onset dementia across North Yorkshire.  Once referred, they’ll allocate a specialist Dementia Support Advisor to offer support with appropriate services and continue an on-going relationship, promoting independence, wellbeing, peer support and education. They also have a helpline with staff ready to take calls throughout the day and run a number of groups that are specific to the needs of their young onset clients too.

Dementia
UK

Dementia UK offers practical and emotional support for dementia through their Admiral Nurse…

  • Dementia helpline. They have community-based Admiral Nurses which provide specialised one-on-one dementia support to families. Their website also offers lots of useful information and resources covering various aspects of dementia.

Young Dementia Network

The Young Dementia Network is an online community of people, passionate about improving…

  • the lives of people affected by dementia. They have lots of resources available on their website solely dedicated to young onset dementia –  not only for people affected by young onset dementia but also to clinicians to help diagnosis and those in dementia support roles too.

Here at Wellburn, we recognise the impact dementia and young onset dementia can have, not only on the individual but also on their entire support network too. Which is why our team is here to help and offer support, not only to those living with dementia and young onset dementia, but to their loved ones and caregivers too.

"St Catherine's has been the best thing to happen to Dad in a long time. He's so happy now, and we're very grateful that he's able to live here. The staff are so caring and treat the residents like their own family."

My late wife spent almost a year in the home, and the care she received was second to none. You had to see the love and patience first-hand to truly understand. I will always be grateful for that time."
