Dementia friendly spaces that use cutting edge research and design.

Both of our dementia specialist homes, St Catherine’s and The Manor at St Catherine’s, are a heady mix of both form and function, bringing cutting edge research and technology to the fore. Creating uniques spaces that make sure that every single aspect of the environment is dementia friendly.

Working and collaborating with experts in the field of dementia, ‘Path’ is our transformative programme, designed to cultivate a culture of excellence in dementia care.

Here at family run Wellburn, we leave no stone unturned when it comes to excellence in dementia care. And the spaces inside and outside of our homes play a crucial part in creating the right environment to allow our residents and clients to feel calm, relaxed and safe.

Using the latest research available and working closely in partnership with our collaboration partners, such as Dementia Forward, we make sure that the spaces we provide are using the all of the latest design, technology and science in the field of dementia.

Let’s take a look at some of the key areas that make a difference…

Leaving nothing to chance.

Wayfinding plays a crucial role in our dementia specialist homes for a number of reasons. Residents with dementia can often experience disorientation and confusion, which can at times cause them to feel lost. We find that effective wayfinding strategies help them navigate through our homes safely and calmly.

Wayfinding tools such as clear signage, consistent layouts, and recognisable landmarks enable them to move around more independently, which delivers huge benefits to their quality of life, significantly reduces anxiety and makes the environment less overwhelming and confusing.

Sensory experiences.

We understand that sensory stimulation helps to keep the brain active and engaged, which is particularly important for individuals with dementia, who will be experiencing varying degrees of cognitive decline.

Which is why we invest a lot of time, resource and money into making sure that our homes offer a vast array of sensory experiences. Across both of our St Catherine’s and The Manor, we have purpose built spaces to cater for specific needs, whether that’s dementia or young onset dementia. All of which are designed to stimulate the senses, helping to maintain cognitive function and slow the progression of dementia. Take a look at our galleries on both homes pages to get a better idea.

Spotting signs early.

The first small signs of dementia are the most important, as they could be an indication of something more serious, so it’s important for families and carers to be aware of any small but noticeable changes.

Detecting these signs sooner rather than later is key to effectively managing symptoms and finding the best treatment and support available.

Let’s take a look at some common symptons and how to spot them…

When it comes to dementia, every journey and path is different. We explore some of these journeys in our case studies, as we take a look at how dementia impacts not only the person living with it, but all of those in the support network, from carers, families and friends.

Making a real
difference to
peoples lives.

"St Catherine's has been the best thing to happen to Dad in a long time. He's so happy now, and we're very grateful that he's able to live here. The staff are so caring and treat the residents like their own family."

"My late wife spent almost a year in the home, and the care she received was second to none. You had to see the love and patience first-hand to truly understand. I will always be grateful for that time."
